AI Romance Scams: Warning Signs
AI-powered romance scams use chatbots and AI-generated photos or video to build a convincing relationship online before asking for money. The relationship moves fast, avoids meeting in person or video calling live, and eventually always needs money for an emergency.

Why these scams are harder to spot now
Romance scams have existed for years, but AI has made them faster to run and harder to spot. A single scammer, or an AI chatbot doing the work automatically, can now maintain convincing conversations with many victims at once, using AI-generated photos of people who do not exist. People assume they would recognise a scam by inconsistent messages or poor English. AI-written messages are consistent, personalised, and respond naturally to almost anything, so "look for red flags in the writing" is far less reliable than it used to be.

Frequently asked questions
Can AI really run a convincing romance scam without a human involved?
Increasingly yes, though many scams still involve a human directing the AI’s output.
How do I check if a photo is AI-generated or stolen?
A reverse image search can reveal if a photo appears elsewhere under a different name. AI-generated photos may not appear anywhere else at all.
What should I do if I think I am being scammed?
Stop sending money immediately, do not confront the scammer, and report it to Action Fraud and the platform where you met.
