Can I choose when my computer restarts after an update?
Yes. On Windows you can set Active Hours (the times when you typically use your computer), and updates will install outside those hours. On a Mac you can choose to install updates overnight. You do not need to let updates interrupt your work.
Is it safe to install updates straight away, or should I wait?
For security patches, installing promptly is the right approach. The risk of being exploited by an unpatched vulnerability is far greater than the small risk of a problematic update. Security updates specifically are almost always safe to install immediately.
My computer is too old to receive updates. What should I do?
If your operating system no longer receives security updates, you are at increased risk. Consider upgrading to a newer version of the OS, or replacing the device. A computer running an unsupported OS should not be used for banking or accessing sensitive accounts.
Do operating system updates cost anything?
No. Security updates for Windows, macOS, iOS, and Android are always free. Major version upgrades (such as moving to Windows 11) are also free if your device meets the requirements.
