Keep macOS up to date automatically
Software updates are the single most effective security habit there is. Most attacks rely on flaws that have already been fixed in an update, so a Mac that keeps itself current is a much harder target.

Turn on automatic updates
Go to System Settings, then General, then Software Update, then click the small info button next to Automatic Updates. Turn on every option, especially Install macOS updates and Install Security Responses and system files. Security Responses are small, fast patches Apple can push between the bigger updates.
Install what's waiting now
While you're there, install any update that's already waiting. Updates often need a restart, so a good moment is at the end of the day when you can leave the Mac to it.
Don't put it off
It's tempting to click later for weeks. Try not to, an update sitting uninstalled is exactly the gap attackers look for. Automatic updates take the decision off your hands entirely.
