Change the admin password
Routers ship with a default admin password that attackers know. Log in to your router (type an address like 192.168.1.1 into a browser, or check the sticker on the router) and set a strong, unique admin password.
Use strong Wi-Fi encryption
In the router settings, make sure your Wi-Fi uses WPA3 or at least WPA2, and set a strong Wi-Fi password. Avoid the older WEP option, which is easily broken.
Keep the router updated
Check for a firmware update while you're in there, and turn on automatic updates if the router offers them. Router makers patch security holes, and an out-of-date router is a common weak point. If yours is many years old and no longer gets updates, it may be time to replace it.
