Meta AI now appears across Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp, built directly into search and chat rather than offered as a separate app you choose to install. That makes it different from ChatGPT or Gemini in an important way: you cannot simply turn it off. People assume every AI feature can be switched off the way ChatGPT’s or Gemini’s can. Managing Meta AI means understanding what limited controls actually exist, not looking for a toggle that is not there.

What you can and cannot control

WhatsApp: Settings → Chats → turn off "Show Meta AI button" to hide the icon, though this does not stop Meta AI processing within the app entirely
Instagram and Facebook: no toggle removes Meta AI from search or the feed
Muting, archiving, or avoiding the AI chat icon reduces how often you see it, without switching it off at a system level
