Set a strong hotspot password
Go to Settings, then Personal Hotspot, then Wi-Fi Password, and set a strong one, not something short or obvious. Anyone who knows it can use your data allowance and share your connection, so treat it like any other Wi-Fi password.
Turn it on only when you need it
Leave Personal Hotspot off when you're not using it, and switch it on when you actually need to share your connection. That way it isn't quietly discoverable to devices around you.
A safer choice than public Wi-Fi
When you're out and need to get your laptop online for something sensitive, your own hotspot is usually a safer option than a café's public Wi-Fi, because only your devices are on it. Once you're done, turn it back off.
