Using a VPN on iPhone
A VPN scrambles your internet connection so others on the same network can't read it. On an iPhone it's most useful on public Wi-Fi, and less needed on mobile data or your own home network.

When to switch it on
Turn on your VPN when you're on Wi-Fi you don't control, in a hotel, café, or airport, particularly before signing in to anything sensitive. On your mobile data connection you generally don't need one.
Choosing one
Pick a reputable paid provider with a clear no-logging policy, such as Mullvad, Proton VPN, or NordVPN, and install its app from the App Store. Avoid free VPNs, as many earn their money by logging and selling your browsing, which defeats the point.
Set it and forget it
Most VPN apps have a setting to connect automatically on untrusted Wi-Fi. Turn that on and the app protects you without you having to remember. You'll see a small VPN badge at the top of the screen when it's active.
