The signs

Warning signs include programs you didn't install, your browser home page changing on its own, being locked out of accounts, or friends receiving messages you didn't send.

The first steps

Work through these in order:

Disconnect from the internet to cut off anyone with access. Unplug the network cable or turn off Wi-Fi.
Change your important passwords from a different, trusted device, such as your phone. Start with your email, then banking.
Run a full scan in Windows Security, and remove anything it finds.

If it's serious

If the problems continue, or sensitive data like banking is involved, the safest fix is to back up your personal files, then reset Windows from Settings > System > Recovery. A clean reinstall removes anything hidden.
