Your web browser is your front door to the internet, so it's worth setting up well. All the main browsers have built-in protection that warns you about dangerous sites and downloads. It's usually on by default, but it's worth checking.

Turn on safe browsing

Here's where to find it in the main browsers:

Microsoft Edge: Settings > Privacy, search, and services > turn on Microsoft Defender SmartScreen.
Google Chrome: Settings > Privacy and security > Security > choose Enhanced or Standard protection.
Firefox: Settings > Privacy & Security > tick Block dangerous and deceptive content.

When a site is flagged

If your browser shows a full-page red warning, take it seriously. Don't click through to the site, and don't enter any details. Close the tab. These warnings catch known scam and malware sites before they can reach you.

Keep your browser updated

Browsers update themselves in the background, but it helps to close and reopen yours now and then so updates finish installing. An up-to-date browser has the latest protection.
