Turn on two-factor authentication
Two-factor means signing in needs your password plus a code on a device you own. Open Settings, tap your name, then Sign-In & Security, and turn on Two-Factor Authentication if it isn't already.
Check your devices and recovery
On the same screen, scroll to the list of devices signed in to your account. Remove any you don't recognise or no longer use. Add a trusted phone number, and consider a recovery contact or recovery key, so you can always get back in if you lose your phone.
Watch for fake sign-in prompts
Apple will never ask for your password by text or email. If a message asks you to verify your Apple Account through a link, ignore it. Only enter your details in the Settings app or on apple.com.
