Set it up
Go to Settings, then Face ID & Passcode (or Touch ID & Passcode on older models) and follow the steps to scan your face or fingerprint. You can add an alternate appearance if Face ID sometimes struggles.
Choose where it applies
On the same screen you can turn Face ID on for unlocking, the App Store, Apple Pay, and password autofill. Turning it on for these means you approve them with a glance rather than typing anything.
The passcode still matters
Face ID is a convenient front door, but your passcode is the real lock. Your phone asks for the passcode after a restart or if Face ID fails a few times, which is normal. Keep that passcode strong, and the next guide shows you how.
