Back up your iPhone
A backup is the safety net behind everything else. If your iPhone is lost, broken, or stolen, a recent backup means you keep your photos, messages, and settings, and setting up a new phone becomes simple.

The easy way: iCloud Backup
Go to Settings, then your name, then iCloud, then iCloud Backup, and turn it on. From then on, your iPhone backs itself up automatically overnight whenever it's charging and on Wi-Fi. It's the simplest option and needs nothing plugged in.
If you need more space
The free iCloud tier is small, and photos fill it quickly. You can either pay a small monthly amount for more storage, often less than a coffee, or back up to a computer instead using Finder (Mac) or the Apple Devices app (Windows), which has no storage limit.
Check it's actually working
On the iCloud Backup screen, look at the date of the last successful backup. If it's old, tap Back Up Now while on Wi-Fi and see that it completes. A backup only helps if it's recent, so it's worth a glance now and then.
