Keep iOS up to date automatically

Keeping iOS current is the single most effective thing you can do for your iPhone's security. Most attacks rely on flaws that Apple has already fixed, so an up-to-date phone is a far harder target.

Turn on automatic updates

Go to Settings, then General, then Software Update, then Automatic Updates, and turn on both Download iOS Updates and Install iOS Updates. Also turn on Security Responses, which are small, fast fixes Apple can send between the bigger updates.

Install what's waiting

Back on the Software Update screen, install any update already waiting. Updates usually install overnight while the phone is charging and connected to Wi-Fi, so plugging in at night is all it takes.

Don't delay for weeks

It's easy to keep tapping later. Try not to, an uninstalled update is exactly the gap attackers look for. With automatic updates on, you don't have to think about it at all.
