Most scams and dodgy downloads start with a website. Safari has built-in protections that warn you about dangerous sites, and a couple of settings make them stronger.

Keep fraud warnings on
Go to Settings, then Apps, then Safari, and make sure Fraudulent Website Warning is on. This flags sites known for phishing before you hand over any details.
Cut down on tracking
In the same Safari settings, Prevent Cross-Site Tracking limits how advertisers follow you around the web. It's on by default, so just confirm it's still enabled.
Check the address before you type
When a link takes you to a login page, glance at the web address at the top. Scammers use lookalike addresses to steal passwords. If anything looks off, don't enter your details, go to the site yourself by typing its name into a search or using your saved bookmark.
