Use a standard account for everyday work
Most Macs are set up with a single administrator account that's used for everything. Doing your daily work in a standard account instead is a simple way to limit what any malicious software can do.

Why it helps
An admin account can change any setting and install anything. If malware runs while you're logged in as an admin, it inherits those powers. A standard account can't make those deep changes without an admin password, so a bad click does far less harm.
How to set it up
Go to System Settings, then Users & Groups, and add a new account set to Standard for your everyday use. Keep your existing admin account for when you genuinely need it. When something needs admin rights, macOS simply asks for the admin name and password.
It's a small change
You'll barely notice the difference day to day, and the occasional password prompt is a useful moment to pause and check that a change is one you actually meant to make.
