The five areas that matter

Cyber Essentials is the UK government-backed scheme for basic cyber security. It groups protection into five areas, and they map neatly onto a Windows PC. You don't need to do everything today: start with updates and protection, then work through the rest at your own pace.

Keep Windows updated: most attacks use flaws that Microsoft has already fixed, and updates close those gaps.
Turn on your protection: Windows Security (Defender) and the firewall guard against viruses and unwanted connections.
Control who can sign in: a strong sign-in, and a standard (non-admin) account for daily use, limit the damage if something goes wrong.
Set up your device safely: a few settings, like Secure Boot and privacy options, quietly reduce your risk.
Protect against malware: safe browsing, careful downloads, and knowing what a scam looks like.
